Operating System
Windows (XP, Vista)
Introduction:
Windows XP is a line of operating systems produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, notebook computers, and media centers. The name "XP" is short for "experience".
Windows XP is the successor to both Windows 2000 Professional and WindowsMe, and is the first consumer-oriented operating system produced by Microsoft to be built on the Windows NT kernel and architecture.
Windows XP was first released on 25 October 2001
Windows XP is a line of proprietary operating systems developed by Microsoft for use on general-purpose computer systems, including home and business desktops, notebook computers, and media centers.
The letters "XP" stand for eXPerience. XP added improved support for gaming, digital photography, instant messaging and wireless networking.
It added a personal firewall, and it improved the sharing of connections to the Internet.
XP handles audio and video more efficiently than earlier versions of Windows, something which becomes apparent when you're using Windows Messenger.
Why Microsoft created Windows XP
Microsoft created Windows XP in order to update the user interface, add new features, unify the code base between the separate families of Windows, and to provide a more stable platform. .
Windows XP, Microsoft's first OS to combine the Windows 9x code with the NT code, finally removing the MS-DOS layer from Windows 9x, was released on October 25, 2001.
Windows XP recommended system requirements:
• PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor • 128 megabytes of RAM or higher • 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space • Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor • CD-ROM or DVD drive
Features of windows xp
• Digital photography The features in Windows XP make it easy to transfer pictures directly    from your digital camera to your computer and even organize and share your photos.
• Games for Windows Games for Windows open a wide world of fantasy and adventure.    Take a break from reality and have fun with friends and family at any age.

Windows vista:
Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Vista, has been met with less-than-overwhelming enthusiasm by the market. The first truly 64-bit Windows, Vista has been criticized as being buggy, and its huge resource demands -- much of it due to its3-D UI -- have irritated many consumers and left enterprises questioning the need to upgrade hardware just to be able to run the Vista OS.
However, Windows Vista has been praised for dramatically improved security and some other features.
Windows Vista is among a line of operating systems developed by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, Tablet PCs, and media center PCs. Prior to its announcement on July 22, 2005, Windows Vista was known by its codename "Longhorn."
Development was completed on November 8, 2006; over the following three months it was released in stages to computer hardware and software manufacturers, business customers, and retail channels.
On January 30, 2007, it was released worldwide, and was made available for purchase and download from Microsoft's website.
The release of Windows Vista came more than five years after the introduction of its predecessor, Windows XP, the longest time span between successive releases ofMicrosoft Windows desktop operating systems.
Features:
1. Searching & Organizing: Every folder in Windows Vista contains a search area that is used to find a particular file. Just type the name of the file you are looking for, or even type some information contained in the file. If you still can’t find it, Windows Vista provides a more thorough search tool to find the file you are looking for.
2. Security: The Internet grows larger every day, with literally hundreds of mil-lions of pages of information available to you. However, so too grow the number of viruses, spyware, and other such malicious software (referred to as ‘malware’). Windows Vista includes an arsenal of de-fences to help keep you and your data safe, such as Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.
3. Internet Explorer Windows Vista includes Internet Explorer 7, an all-new version of Internet Explorer with support for tabbed browsing, a wide range of multimedia content, and more. We will cover the basic use of Internet Explorer later in this manual.
4. Back Up and Restore Center: Windows Vista can back up settings, files, and programs to CD, DVD, USB flash drive, hard drive, or another computer on a network. Per-form these steps manually or use the automated scheduling option.
5. New User Interface (Windows Aero) Windows Vista features four different levels of user experience—Basic, Windows Classic, Standard, and Windows Aero. All controls are totally redesigned in Windows Vista and look even better now. The Aero user interface is the top of the line and takes advantage of the latest ad-vances in computer hardware.
On computers equipped with graphics hardware that supports the new Windows Driver Display Model (WDDM), the Aero provides more stability and smoother window handling. The main element of this interface is the transparent glass de-sign, with subtle effects such as dynamic reflections and smooth an-imations.
6. Windows Ready Drive: Windows Ready Drive takes advantage of the latest hybrid hard drives to provide faster boot-up, hibernate, and resume. It works by writing data to the flash memory on the hybrid hard disk, which lessens the amount of spinning for the mechanical hard drive, thus saving battery power.
And also increases the life of your hard drive. With a hybrid drive, Windows Vista can resume more quickly from Sleep because data can be restored from flash memory faster than from the spinning mechanical hard drive.

Installation of XAMPP
XAMPP: XAMPP is a small and light Apache distribution containing the most common web development technologies in a single package.
Its contents, small size, and portability make it the ideal tool for students developing and testing applications in PHP and MySQLXAMPP is available as a free download in two specific packages: full and light.
While the full package download provides a wide array of development tools, this article will focus on using XAMPP Light which contains the necessary technologies that meet the Ontario Skills Competition standards.
As the name implies, the light version is a small package containing Apache HTTP Server, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, Openssl, and SQLite. For more details on the packaging and versions, refer to TABLE
1. In order to be able to successfully run XAMPP Lite, you will require 17 MB for the self-extracting ZIP Installation archive and at least 118 MB after it has been extracted on alocal hard disk or USB drive.
What is XAMPP ?
XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPPis really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start.
XAMPP Supported Platforms
a version for Linux systems (tested for Ubuntu, SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian),
a version for Windows 98, NT, 2000, 2003 and XP,
a beta version for Solaris SPARC (developed and tested under Solaris 8), and a beta version for MacOS X.
This MacOSX and Solaris versions of XAMPP are still in the first steps of development. Use at you own risk!
In this tutorial, we will walk through downloading, installing, and setting up the XAMPP package. XAMPP is a free package that includes an easy-to-set up web server (Apache), database server (MySQL), and server-side scripting language (PHP).
Setting up a local AMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP) environment has typically required configuring the different applications to work on their own, and then to work with each other.
There is a version of the XAMPP package available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and the Solaris operating system. XAMPP is free to download, and the package contains the following:
• The AMP environment of Apache, MySQL, and PHP.

• The software phpMyAdmin, the leading web-based interface to MySQL, which is needed to manage the database.
XAMPP also comes with other features such as OpenSSL and FileZilla (an FTP server), that you may find useful.

Manually installation
Installation of Apache
Manually installation of Apache
Apache is a web server. In fact Apache is the worlds most popular and dominating web server with over 61% of all Internet web servers running Apache. A far second is Microsoft IIS, with a measly 19% of market share.
Apache actually stands for "A patchy server". Since the original Apache was built from "patching" the original NCSA HTTP daemon in early 1995.
Apache is not owned by a single commercial entity (like IIS is owned by Microsoft, iPlanet is owned by Sun/Netscape Alliance) ,Apache has been written in C, using a dynamic, modular architecture (much like the kernel module architecture) in which pieces of functionality can be inserted into the web server by loading pieces of code known as modules. This makes Apache highly extensible and configurable.
Requirements
The following requirements exist for building Apache:
Disk Space: Make sure you have approximately 12 MB of temporary free disk space available. After installation Apache occupies approximately 3 MB of disk space (the actual required disk space depends on the amount of compiled in third party modules, etc).
ANSI-C Compiler: Make sure you have an ANSI-C compiler installed. The GNU C compiler (GCC) from the Free Software Foundation (FSF) is recommended (version 2.7.2 is fine). If you don't have GCC then at least make sure your vendor’s compiler is ANSI compliant.
Steps for installing Apache-
